How I Chose A Unique Name For This Blog

What’s in a blog name? The name of your blog is what makes it unique- it can be personal to you, or it can be something that resonates with your niche. Or you can combine both! Whatever the name is, it needs to be a memorable and short name that the readers will remember. So, avoid complicated names that readers will probably forget after leaving your blog. Also, avoid having any obscene language or profanity, as your blog may end up being blacklisted or classed as a spam site.

Some bloggers may combine a personal name and name that relates to their niche. For instance, the blogger Nandita Sampat named her visual designs blog Nandita Sampat Creations. Back in September, we did a collaboration, and you can read our guest posts here.

In this post, I’m going to talk about my first website, and why I named this blog The Brown Minimalist. Hopefully after reading this story, you’ll have some great ideas on how to name your blog, and a great story behind it too…

Names to avoid with your travel blog

If you have a travel blog such as this one, then I advise you now to avoid having names like ‘Tim’s Travels’ or ‘Nomadic Pete’. Otherwise your blog will simply end up getting lost in the pool of ‘Travels’ and ‘Nomadic’ blogs in Google Search… Plus the award for the best ‘Nomadic’ site goes to Nomadic Matt, written by Matthew Kepnes.

The name of my first website

When I was a teenager, I attempted to make a website using Moonfruit. I used it to host a portfolio of short animations and wallpapers I made in my spare time throughout school.

After watching a children’s show, I named the website UC Texas (UC didn’t stand for anything) as I thought it was quite a cool name. After discovering the name had been taken (Universal City Texas), I ended up changing it a year later. I had to come up with a new name…

I then typed ‘film’ into a random name generator, which created a long list of names. From this list, I chose the FilmForce. I chose this name as it resonated with the niche- my portfolio of short films. And I thought it was a catchy name. What happened to the FilmForce website? A few years ago, the Moonfruit plan expired and I was reluctant to purchase a plan. So that was the end of FilmForce…

So, one option is to name your blog in relation to your niche, like I did with my first film portfolio. You can use a random name generator to help you do this, where you simply type words that relate to your niche.

How I chose the name for this blog

The other way of choosing a name for your blog is one that is personal to you. So, it could be something like ‘John Smith Productions’ for instance. Though my blog is mainly related to travel, I decided to name my blog The Brown Minimalist, which is related to things that have personal meaning to me.

The Meaning of ‘Minimalist’

I chose the name minimalist because I am interested in minimalism and how to own fewer possessions. To me, minimalism in a material context means only owning possessions that add value and that you’re passionate about. It means doing away with clutter, and stuff that doesn’t bring any value into your life… For tips on minimalism, you can read some hacks here:

Minimalism also relates to travel too. When packing essentials for a trip, it’s important to only take ones that you absolutely need, or you’ll have no space in your bag. When doing activities and eating out, it is important to save money too. Here are 7 ways to save money when travelling in the UK.

Though initially I chose ‘Minimalist’ because it was a concept personal to me, you could argue it relates more to the niche of this blog now. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Verdict

In this post, I have discussed two main ways you can come up with a name for your blog. Either base it on your niche, or something that’s personal to you. You can even combine the two together. As well as choosing the name for you blog, the backstory behind the name of your blog is important too…
