The backstory of starting The Brown Minimalist

Before the lockdown, some of my friends had encouraged me to launch a vlog to document my travels. However, I wasn’t too keen on the idea of launching a vlog as that can be very time consuming- filming, editing, promotion, etc.

When looking at ways to document your travels with your photo collection, one recurring idea I kept coming across was to start a blog… On 17th May 2020, I finally made the decision to purchase my own Bluehost plan, with several different topics in mind at the time. Why did I name this blog The Brown Minimalist? You can read my post here on what’s in the name of a blog.

Initially, I decided to write about travel reviews and watch reviews using my photo collection. But now, I’ve decided to move away from watch reviews and focus more on offering hacks and travel reviews based on my own experiences.

Important lessons about writing and SEO learnt in these 6 months

Writing has never been one of my strong points, so the idea of writing anything used to be very daunting. One great thing about blogging is how your writing changes and improves over time. With commitment and dedication, you’ll become more confident at writing in general… When I first started writing blog posts, I admit that they weren’t great at all.

Initially, I had no idea how to use headings properly to split up posts. And definitely no idea about how SEO worked. When using Yoast SEO, so long as the smiley faces on the ‘Readability’ and ‘SEO Score’ were green, all was good… It didn’t matter how many links there were (or how I wrote them in), nor did the meta description just as long as it had the keyword.

An ongoing lesson is to pay attention to the way you write your posts, and the SEO score as this is how you drive traffic to your blog. You can’t expect to learn everything about SEO overnight. Like other things, it takes practise, and make sure you keep learning about it to improve your posts. Regularly fix your old posts to ensure the meta description and keywords are up to date. Fix the links and anchor texts too. And take full advantage of social media to promote your content and seek guest writing opportunities.

To improve your blog and SEO, I’d recommend having regular consultations with a digital marketing company such as The Digital Coach 101. You can also read about it on Neil Patel’s website, or complete some online courses in your spare time. If you also know other people who run blogs, then it’s worth having a conversation with them too to find out some tips from them.
