See Beautiful Views of the Thames by Maidenhead Bridge

When I think of the River Thames, Maidenhead isn’t normally the first place that comes to mind… This small market town is probably best known for being Theresa May’s constituency, and being part of the Silicon Corridor that runs along the M4 from South Wales to London. It is also part of the London Commuter Belt, served by GWR and Crossrail. And it is home to large companies such as Three, Seiko, and Adobe. Though this town may not seem very exciting, did you know there are some great spots to see the Thames?

One of the best spots is by Maidenhead Bridge, located on the A4 in between Taplow and Maidenhead. This bridge is now Grade I Listed, and has a history dating back to 1280 when it was first built.

Take spectacular photos of the River Thames

One of the best times to see spectacular views of the Thames in Maidenhead is during the summer months. The best spot is by the Ada Lewis Memorial Fountain, where you can see Maidenhead Bridge in its full glory too. There are also benches by the fountain and bridge, which makes a great picnic spot. Perfect if you want to spend an afternoon by the river with your family and friends.

On sunny days, the bridge, and sand apartments opposite reflect on the waters which looks beautiful. This presents the opportunity to take some great photos, especially with the HDR setting on.

Brunel’s Sounding Arch

From Maidenhead Bridge, you can also see Maidenhead Railway Bridge (aka The Sounding Arch), where GWR trains pass over. As well as the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, Isambard Brunel also designed this bridge and many others for his railway projects. This bridge was part of his plan to link London and Bristol with the line that is now known as the Great Western Railway. From mid- 2012, this bridge became Grade I Listed.

The bridge is made up of two large arches, with the Thames towpath passing under the right arch. You can hear really loud echoes underneath it, which is where it gets the name ‘Sounding Arch’ from. I really like the red- orange colour of this bridge, which in some ways reminds me of the design of Maidenhead Central Mosque when I think about it now. In my opinion, the perfect photo of this bridge can be captured when green GWR trains pass over it…

The Location of Maidenhead Bridge and the Thames

Maidenhead Bridge is approximately a 25- minute walk from Maidenhead Station, and approximately a 20- minute walk from Taplow Station. When coming from the Taplow Station, this is simply a case of walking down Bath Road, past the BMW Sytner, Volkswagen garages, and the various other car repair shops…

But if you want to see other parts of Maidenhead, then I’d recommend coming from Maidenhead Station. As this is quite a small town, I’d recommend getting around on foot, as you can also visit the Nicholsons Shopping Centre and some of the parks on the way. Although the Nicholsons Shopping Centre isn’t the greatest mall, you can find some great clearance deals here. One time, I saw shirts in H&M being sold for £5, and 10p rulers in Ryman.

If you’re coming from Nicholsons, signposts directing you to the bridge are dotted along High St (though you may have to end up having to use Google Maps if it’s your first time here). But the easiest way to get here from Nicholsons is to keep walking down the A4, past the Sainsburys and David Lloyd towards Taplow.

Verdict

Overall, Maidenhead Bridge is a great spot to come with your family and friends during the summer for a picnic. There’s plenty of space to walk around and benches, so you can take the time to admire beautiful views of the Thames. Don’t forget to take photos! Whilst you’re in Maidenhead, don’t forget to visit the parks here, the market, and the Volkswagen and BMW garages too.
