5 Useful Things to do on Your Train Journey

5 Useful Things to do on Your Train Journey

If you don’t want to take your car on your travels, then chances are you’ll decide to get to your destination by train. Usually, train journeys just consist of sitting in your seat and looking at the different ‘sights’- mostly just wheat fields and houses… Instead of doing this, here are 5 things you could do to make your train journey more useful.

Catch up with someone on the phone

Catch up with one of your friends or relatives that you’ve been meaning to call. Most trains come with strong wi-fi networks too, so you can connect your phone to it to ensure your calls are top quality. And some come with sockets/ USB ports so you can charge your phone too.

Look up things to do at your destination

Ask your friends, look on TripAdvisor, look on blogs, etc… If you’re travelling somewhere new, take the time to look up places of interest there, and places to eat (very important). The latter is especially important, so you don’t end up going all the way there just to get a McDonalds. Cue facepalm.

Sort your emails out

Send any important emails, and sort through your mailbox on the train so it doesn’t become a burden later. Unsubscribe to pointless promotional emails, create folders to sort your emails, and delete ones you don’t need anymore. Use email apps, so you can quickly check your mail on the move.

Read some books

If you’re struggling to find time in the day to read, then take a book along on your next train journey. Especially if it’s going to be while… At the same time, you can give your eyes a break from your phone screen.

Reading is a great way to pass the time and learn new things at the same time as well. So, in my post on things to take on your travels, I should’ve probably added a great book to the list. Here are some great titles to get started:

Brainstorm ideas for projects you’re doing

Sometimes eureka moments and great ideas come when you least expect it. So, always make sure you have your notes app or keep a notebook and pen on hand. Take the time to brainstorm any ideas you have for projects, so you don’t forget them later in the day. For example, if you’re thinking of blog topics on the train, write down potential topics you want to write about. Then write down key topics you want to talk about, what pictures you want to use, how to structure it, etc…

Verdict

As you can see, there are many other useful things you can do on your train journey, whether it’s reading a book one journey, or completing any outstanding work on another. How do you like to pass the time on your journeys? Let me know in the comments below…

  1. This is a major plus for using public transportation. Unfortunately, there isn’t much opportunity for that where I live. I would love to get work done during my commute. When we lived in New Jersey, everyone took the train and did many of these things. I’m kinda jealous.

  2. I want to take a train ride but I haven’t been anywhere I am not driving. There is a train tour from NC to TN that I’d love to take. These are great ideas and hopefully one day soon I’ll be able to use them, haha.

  3. Commute time, whether it’s on a train, bus, plane, etc., is a perfect time to knock out some of those little work tasks that I like to put off for the most part. I often don’t bring my laptop, as it’s larger and takes up more space, so that’s when the tablet is my go-to tool for the job! After all, you’re stuck sitting there anyway, so you might as well knock these tasks off your to-do list and you won’t have to worry about them when you have more options of things to do later!
